Breaking news from Bega Council Meeting 22nd April 2026
After an informative and compelling address to council from members of the public, the Staff recommendation was changed from approval to deferral.
All councillors unanimously voted to defer a decision on the Quarry DA, until issues raised by the community can be thoroughly investigated. It was recommended that further reports, assessments and surveys be completed on the Quarry’s potential impact on air quality, noise pollution, road safety, water pollution and more.
This is a huge step in the right direction and a great success for those of us who have legitimate concerns over the Bournda Quarry development.
A big thank you to everyone who has helped and who made their voices heard, it definitely made an impactful difference.
And a thank you to BVSC for taking our concerns about this development seriously.

If approved the Rhyolite quarry will be allowed to operate 6 days a week for 15 years.
This will affect you if you live in Wallagoot, Kalaru, Tathra, Tura Beach, Merimbula, Bega.
WHY IS IT BAD TO HAVE A QUARRY IN OUR COMMUNITY?
- 15 years of Rhyolite quarry operations once approved – damage is irreparable
- Extractive industry is not permitted in this zoning. This is not a remote industrial zone.
- Blasting & crushing rhyolite onsite creates fine silica dust that can travel up to 20 km
- Dust contaminating local waterways, plants and homegrown vegetables
- Silica dust is the new asbestos – causing long term health issues (eg lung cancer)
- Serious risks to our air and water quality
- Quarry will introduce heavy truck traffic, machinery noise, light pollution to the area
- Road safety issues with increased truck traffic degrading our roads
- Trucks spread silica dust through neighbourhoods via wheels and load
- Vulnerable Glossy Black Cockatoos nesting and feeding habitat destroyed
- Local water bodies we rely on polluted with toxic silica runoff
- Stress from constant machinery noise and blasting affecting animals, pets and wildlife
Bournda Quarry is in the middle of a growing rural area. Surrounded by homes and families who rely on the land and water every day. This is not a remote industrial zone. It is a living community that is continuing to grow and its zoning reflects this (E3 & E4).
These impacts do not stay confined to one property. They spread outward, affecting neighbouring homes, health, access to clean water, wildlife, property values, and overall quality of life.
Wallagoot Lake is 3 km away, Kalaru is 8 km, Tathra is 12 km, Tura Beach is 14 km, Merimbula is 17 km, Bega is 17 km.
How far away is your home from Bournda Quarry?
Now is the time to object to council, make your voice heard and demand they reject this quarry development. Why should we lose so much for one company’s profits?
